Gran Faustino I Gran Reserva 2004

1964 was an exceptional vintage in the Rioja region, the legendary vintage of reference in the history of wine in the DOCa Rioja.

That same year, Bodegas Faustino launched its Faustino I Gran Reserva brand, the winery’s most iconic wine, which is now found in more than 140 countries.

In 2004, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Faustino I launch, thanks to an exceptional vintage that was given an ‘Excellent’ rating, we decided to pay homage to the essence of the winery itself – the vineyard itself, the long barrel ageing and bottle ageing process – with a new wine that simply couldn’t be named anything else:

The design of Gran Faustino I Gran Reserva brings together the elements that define the identity of the Faustino brand, such as the portrait, the gothic typography and the yellow tones that are golden in this proposal.

These iconic visual elements allow us to generate a packaging proposal for Gran Faustino I Gran Reserva, more courageous and contemporary without losing the identity and classicism that a brand like Faustino should not renounce.

The brand only appears on the collar, leaving all the visual weight on the famous portrait, giving it a deserved importance that adds to the rest of the range, enhancing its identity.

A collection of gran reserva wines, from exceptional vintages chosen by the family and our wine experts under the strictest quality standards. Only a few harvests are chosen to become Gran Faustino I wines.

Gran Faustino I Gran Reserva 2004 is the start of a project in which the vineyard itself and passion, know-how and continuous improvement, history and the present of Bodegas Faustino fuse together so perfectly.

Gran Faustino I Gran Reserva

It’s a classic “coupage” of the Rioja Gran Reservas: Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo.

Gran Faustino I Gran Reserva 2004 has been aged for at least 38 months in American oak (80%) and French oak (20%) barrels, with five rackings during this time. They are barrels in the first, second and third year of use, combining the passage through them to find the balance needed... ‘by listening to the wine’.

During the ageing process, personal tastings by the family and the winemaking team, using all their skill and experience, have been crucial to finding the perfect balance between the barrels.

These tastings were done every eight months, when the wine was racked. After bottling, it has waited many years during a long period of refinement in the cellar’s magnificent wine racks.

great new project

The 2004 vintage is, in addition, one of the six wine vintages rated ‘Excellent’ over the past two decades in the DOCa Rioja.

At Bodegas Faustino, barrel ageing has always been essential in the process of creating our wines and we are world leaders in the Gran Reserva category of the DOCa Rioja.

This is a project where we bring all our know-how and experience in oak ageing, producing a limited edition of 31,401 bottles of this first vintage.

Tasting

Gran Faustino I 2004 is a wine that has a very positive evolution as far as tasting aspects are concerned.

We have a garnet-coloured, medium-bodied, bright wine with a long life ahead of it.

It is clean and intense on the nose. Tertiary aromas predominate, with a marked presence of prunes and ripe fruit, perfectly blending with spicy and balsamic aromas from the barrel ageing. Black pepper is also present, reminding us that the Graciano is part of this very particular blend.

It is on the palate where this great wine shows its elegance. Its entrance is subtle, but it gradually unleashes a flood of sensations. Notes of liquorice, candied fruit, cocoa, and again, the balsamic notes we found on the nose also appear. A well-balanced acidity and polished tannins highlight its silkiness and roundness. It’s a wine brimming with nuances and complexity, very plush, with a sweet and delicate finish.

The bottle

The bottle is unmistakable, as it’s the same as our most famous wine, which has been part of our identity since the launch of Faustino I.

The bottle neck label

We’ve brought back the old bottle neck label of our gran reservas, with its cut-out shapes at the edges. We placed the brand, Gran Faustino I, as a statement, as it’s the main element of the design. 3D embossing work.

The label

The design takes us back to our roots, but with modern printing details that are perfectly integrated and the outcome is a lovely label full of subtlety:
Label using an elegant, metallic paper, with a textured background: paying homage to the old labels of our most iconic wine.

Double mention of the 2004 vintage to highlight it, on the sides framing the border and the portrait. Rioja seals also on both sides of the portrait highlighting the origin.

Exclusive border, where the play with the Fs of Faustino creates a filigree with a 3D embossing.

Portrait of Nicolaes Van Baambeck painted by Rembrandt and the unmistakable icon of the Faustino brand, printed on natural paper, which creates a contrast in texture with the label on it is superimposed. It takes centre stage as it is the most recognised portrait in the world of wine.
