Tasting Notes
Faustino Reserva Icon Edition 2011 is a clean, bright, dark-cherry red wine with good colour intensity, evolving towards burgundy red. It has an intense, complex nose, with a warm, sweet, dry entry, marked by a very mature forest berries and pleasant spicy notes against a background of cabinetmaking scents. Elegant, tasty and structured in the mouth, with amiable, well-integrated tannins and a balanced mouthfeel. Very long finish with hints of nuts.
The grapes for this wine come from a small, six-hectare plot in Malpica, Rioja Alavesa, sheltered from the North by the Sierra de Cantabria. The hillside plot is located at an altitude of 500 metres above sea level, with a north-south arrangement. This provides heavy sun exposure in the summer and plenty of light for most of the day throughout the year. The bush-trained Tempranillo vines are about 35 years old.
The soil is primarily limestone. It is also quite stony, which allows for better heat conservation and contributes to berry ripening. Every year, the grapes are of better quality in this vineyard, with low yields of about 3,500 kg/ha (1.2 kg/vine). The grapes are picked manually in 15 kilo boxes, reflecting the search of optimum quality. Furthermore, the clusters are small and the grapes are smaller than usual, but of exceptional quality. The wines that come from this vineyard have more body and a longer life. These features produce wines which stand out for by their exceptional personality and style.
